True adventure.True human adventures stories, written by fabulous authors, equal books I can’t get enough of. Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer, is a near perfect read for me. The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctica Expedition, by Caroline Alexander is another near perfect read. Darcy Gaechter’s, Amazon Woman, stands closely alongside these remarkable books.Gaechter brings the reader along on an epic adventure tale as three kayakers take on the world’s biggest river. One of the kayakers happens to be a woman…Like Krakauer, Gaechter gives firsthand descriptions of an expedition and these descriptions are the highlight of the book. Instead of a look into high altitude mountaineering, Gaechter gives the reader a look at rainforest river running. The history of the Amazon basin, interactions with native peoples, running whitewater, expedition member dynamics, and soul searching during over 100 hundred days of flat water paddling are what the book is about.Gaechter does an admirable job of writing throughout her entire book, although it’s a fair criticism to say her writing is not the same caliber as Krakauer’s and Alexander’s. She makes no claim though, of being a professional writer, and the tempo of her book is well paced, the writing clear, and above all, authentic.Someone looking for a modern adventure—a true adventure written by the person who accomplished it—will find it here. I highly recommend the book. Gaechter has written a fascinating firsthand account of her descent of the Amazon River. I usually read three or four books at a time. When I get bored or bogged down with one book I switch to another. When I started reading Amazon Woman I ignored my other books and read furiously until I was finished. It is one thing to be the first woman to kayak the length of the largest river in the world and quite another to write competently about your adventure. Darcy Gaechter did both. Darcy knew how to condense a 148 day trip into an exciting story that moved quickly, but included interesting digressions with short bios of herself and her two partners. She also, expertly, inserted information about the Amazon River, the native people they met, the dangers of encountering drug operators, and illegal loggers who routinely murdered outsiders. I am not an adventurer, but I enjoy vicariously tagging along with the authors of the dozens of books I have read about mountain climbing, exploration of remote regions of the planet, and whitewater expeditions. There are some outstanding books in this genre, but few are as well written and engaging as Darcy Gaechter’s Amazon Woman.
