I thought I knew the travel narrative genre well, especially this era when Paul Theroux published Kingdom By the Sea and William Least Heat Moon Blue Highways. But who knew? Alan Booth's beautiful, sad, funny, emotional and perceptive journey from the northern tip of Hokkaido to the south of Kyushu, largely avoiding large towns and cities, is illuminating in so many respects and in large part eclipses those other memorable adventures. The hike is about himself as much as all the characters he meets on the roads, in the bars, the ryokan and minshuku, the bemused school boys and girls meeting and wisecracking with a rare gaijin. The trips starts by the ocean in the summer and ends in autumn in the mountains, infused by the smoke of burning vegetation. The change of seasons herein is described beautifully and with humor: "as I climbed higher up the northern slope of the volcano, the golds and yellows and scarlets thickened till I imagined myself shrunk the the size of an ant that had wandered into a kiddie's kaleidoscope". There wasn't one of the 128 days of this walk that I wasn't looking forward to his descriptions of the locals, the sad industrial towns, oft empty main streets, beaches, mountains and truck-belching highways. I am grateful to have two more Alan Booth books to read and regretful he did lot live longer to see and do more. We are also fortunate to have the 12 minute video, "On the Road", which sheds light on his humility and quiet gregariousness as well as his command of Japanese, albeit Aomori accented. Definitely a trip to re-read and ponder. Great fun. I loved spending time in the author's company while reading this book AND I am sure I would enjoy recreating (some segment of) his journey, BUT I'm not so sure I'd want to go with him. As I like to note:1. There is no travel writer like a British travel writer.2. There is no eccentric like a British eccentric.These two facts are not unrelated.This is NOT the Japan of "Lost in Translation" or "Black Rain". This is a walk through the homely and homey back side of Japan, a counterpoint (more than a foundation) to the glittering Tokyo of popular western imagination. If you enjoy a book that takes you, not to the hotel lobbies and museums and oh-so-mystical touristic shrines, but to the fraying everyday, if you enjoy seeing a behind the stereotypes of a culture, this is fun stuff.That said, this book dates from 20 years ago, and I'm afraid that the scenes of back-of-beyond-Japan that the author describes have now faded from this world. So, all the more reason to climb into this book as a time machine! Also it's a great cross cultural study... I especially enjoyed the scenes he recounts where, after 10 minutes of conversation in Japanese, he is told "no, we can't serve/house foreigners, as we don't speak English". The author's reply "but we've been speaking in Japanese for 10 minutes" usually does not save the day for him. Been there, done that... as we used to say, 20 years ago.
